KC Star blames the Kansas Tax Increase on the GOP?

Yael T. Abouhalkah's column on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, is utter nonsense. Mr. Abouhalkah clearly does not understand the dynamics of the Kansas Legislature. His editorial is titled "GOP-fueled sales tax increase boosts Kansas near top 10." I will give him credit for his statistics. Kansas will be the highest taxed state in the region but the GOP had nothing to do with it. Instead the blame lies squarely on Democrat and Republican-In-Name-Only legislators who voted to increase not only taxes but spending.

Kelsey Smith Act - Missouri Update

The conference report on SB 829 with the omnibus crime bill and the Kelsey Smith Act in it did not pass the Senate. They took it up and a Senator threatened to filibuster due to another provision unrelated to the Kelsey Smith Act, so they laid it over, so we will have to try again next year. Thank you to all those who worked so hard to pass the bill.

KC Tea Party

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit yesterday at the Kansas State Representative Suite and table. I enjoyed meeting new friends and seeing old ones! It was a great afternoon and evening.

The theme I took away from the event yesterday is that we must not only be vocal about the direction our country should take - we must act to make sure it goes in the right direction. That means that talk is no longer enough. We need to become involved in the work of taking our country back. That's one of the reasons I am running for the Kansas House.
